The Chief Engineer oral examination for MEO Class II and MEO Class I certificates is among the most demanding technical assessments in the maritime world. Examiners expect not just theoretical knowledge, but a deep operational and troubleshooting mindset.

Core Technical Areas

  • Marine Diesel Engines: Two-stroke and four-stroke working principles, fuel injection systems, turbocharger operation, and planned maintenance systems.
  • Thermodynamics: Carnot cycle, entropy, heat exchangers, refrigeration systems, and boiler water treatment.
  • Electrical Systems: Switchboard management, generator paralleling, emergency generator requirements under SOLAS.
  • Ship Stability (Engineers): Free surface effect, inclining experiment, damage stability, and bilge systems.

At Orion, our Chief Engineer oral prep program is conducted by serving Senior Masters and Chief Engineers with decades of deep-sea experience on container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers.
